Report: Speech recognition improves turnaround time for UNC Radiologists.

Radiologists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill experienced decreased report turnaround time with the implementation of speech recognition software, according to a report published in the American Journal of Roentgenology.

Researchers studied data for nine months before and after the implementation of speech recognition software, according to a CMIO magazine report. All but two of the 30 UNC radiology faculty members analyzed experienced turnaround time improvements, according to the report.

Before the use of speech recognition, the average turnaround time for the department was 28 hours. That was cut by more than half, down to 12.7 hours, after speech recognition was adopted, according to CMIO.

There was also a 5 percent increase in the number of verified reports completed monthly. The number increased from 16,561 to 17,427.

“Our data confirm the results of previous studies that implementation of a voice recognition system can lead to a significant decrease in report turn-around time,” the report's authors wrote for CMIO.
