Having issues with your Olympus DS-4000?

Recently there has been an increase in technical calls concerning the Olympus DS-4000 Recorders.   Some have mentioned that the recorder screen is blank, some recordings may be cut off or spotty, and others that the recorder does not seem charge properly.

We are happy to report that the problems are usually easily remedied with the replacement of a couple of inexpensive, consumable parts, namely the battery pack, and the memory card.  Since the DS-4000 has been discontinued for quite some time, these items have likely hit the end of their useful life.

To Replace the Battery Pack:

Look at the bottom of the recorder and you will see a sliding door with a grooved arrow that easily slides outwards, and opens to reveal the battery pack.  Simply slide out the old pack, and replace it with a new Olympus BR-403 Ni-MH rechargeable battery pack.  It looks like this:

We have these available ot our online store at the following link:

Be sure to the pack is inserted correctly prior to closing the door.  The + /- end with the metal contacts goes in first, with the groove pointing toward the bottom of the recorder.

To Replace the Memory Card:

Flip your DS-4000 over to reveal the back side and you will see the words "push to eject".  On the side of the recorder diectly under the memory card door is a slide mechanism with the word "open".  Simply slide this release to the right, and the door will pop open to reveal the card.

Next give the card itself a gentle push inwards and it will pop back out allowing it's removal.  It is made by Olympus for your DS-4000 recorder and other Olympus devices, and looks like this:

Replace with a new Olympus xD picture card available here:

You may notice that the new cards are 256MB as opposed to the 32MB that originally came with your recorder.  Thanks to the decrease in price of memory, you get 8 times the memory for a lower price!

Don't Forget to  Format!

Once you insert the new card in the memory slot, be sure to format the card by pressing the "menu" button on the front of the recorder, scroll down to the "sub menu" using the oval ff/rew button next to the menu button, press "menu" again scroll to "start" press "menu" again, when it states "Data will be Cleared", press the "menu" button once again, scroll to start, press "menu" and you will see the formating process take place.  You are now ready to record.

If these simple remedies fail to correct your issue, feel free to contact us as we have a full repair center ready to resolve more complicated issues.  You will need to send your recorder to us, and we will issue you a quote for repair prior to performing any work.  Upon your authorization, your recorder will be fixed, and sent back to you. Turnaround is usually around 1 week. Most repairs can be done for between $65 and $150 dollars.
